and we were very fortunate to have the senator and senator-elect join us this week. we had a series of meetings to try to begin a conversation in the community around what happened and how we can take this terrible tragedy and turn it into something positive. so what we heard from the senators as well as some of our congressional -- the rest of our congressional delegation was that the moment in time is now. that the tide is turning in this country as it relates to gun violence and what we can do about it. and we want to try to bring the community together as quickly as possible to try and lend our voice to the national voice so that we can really make something meaningful happen out of this terrible event. >> and the name of your group is newtown united. but you say that group isn't just a representation of your community. what do you mean by that? >> well, it started with a group of neighbors and friends who were just, you know, trying to channel their emotions and make sense of what happened here and start to put some ideas together on what we might be able to do

i am a little surprised that the president fresh off the election is saying that the speaker of the house is supposed to lead the country. he is supposed to lead, his party is the more difficult to get legislation through. so for him to say in the last 24 hours before the tax increases that it's up to john boehner to fix things surprises me and disappoints me a great deal. >> eric: obviously, you are faulting, in your view, a lack of presidential leadership? not only faulting, i think a lot of folks are not focused, i have believed that the president wants to go over the cliff. peter orszag, telling the president 3 and 4 years that the tax rates needed to go up. howard dean was making the rounds for months, saying that tax rates need to go up. nancy pelosi thinks the tax rates should go up on everybody. does the president have the political will to go against his own party? what we are seeing so far, he is not. we read his first offer, when he sat down with mr. boehner, mr. boehner said here's $800 billion for revenue and what do i get for that? the president allegedly said, that's for fr

in the last election cycle, the nra spent more than $18 million backing pro-gun candidates. but with all that money, the group didn't have so much success. six of the seven nra-backed candidates lost their bids for the senate and of 26 house incumbents that failed to be re-elected, 18 were nra favorites. in fact, the sunlight foundation named the nra one of the most ineffective outside spenders in the 2012 election cycle, yet as a single issue organization, they have long been seen as one of the most influential policy advocates. back with my panel. before we even get into that question, the other thing that has changed about the nra is that their membership, while it is growing, i think they have like four million members strong, actual gun ownership in the country is declining and it has been declining. we have a graphic that shows the change in gun ownership from the '70s until today. so back in 1973, one in two households were gun-owning households. in 2010, that became one in three. in 1980, one in three individuals, one in three people, had a gun. in 2010, it's one in

the president won the election. doesn't he have a point there? >> i actually think he does, but apparently his tone is really infuriating to republicans. and you have to realize that we are -- we're witnessing the implosion of the republican party. they're getting cornered into being the party of millionaires and assault weapons. they're not responding to the broad public. they're responding to interest groups, the nra and its allies, and grover norquist and his pledge. and they haven't figured out how to move away from that. and the failure of the so-called fiscal b plan last week demonstrates that speaker boehner really can't produce a plan that will pass with a majority of republicans. and unless he's willing to allow democrats to play in the house -- and the house is a virtual dictatorship. if he doesn't want to bring up a bill, it stays stalled. so now the focus is shifting to the senate and we'll see if mitch mcconnell and harry reid, two back-room kind of legislators, can cobble something together. i think there's still hope. >> yeah. andy

the notion that our elected leadership can't do the same thing is mind boggling to them. and needs to stop. >> i just have to repeat, congress, you are terrible at your jobs. i really don't like working with you. we're going to talk a bit later in the show about everybody hates congress and what we can do about that. but as much as the public hates congress, you really get the feeling that congress' approval rating among president obama is in the neighborhood of negative 75,000 percent. and yes, numbers geeks, not a real number. but he seems really tired of working with these people. but there is a way in which congress, and particularly congressional republicans may actually be helping president obama out right now. everybody's always known two things about the cliff. you're almost certainly going to get more taxes in a deal after you go over than in a deal before you go over it. that's because after you go over the cliff, taxes already go up for everybody. so anything you do, any reasonable deal congress reaches, it will be a big tax cut. but the other thing about the f

number one: republicans lost this election. they lost it fairly significantly. they lost house seats and senate seats and mitt romney rarely discussed the fiscal cliff. and we look back on the conversation and we think, gosh, it would have been nice if we had a plan that had been laid out, other than what mitt romney was saying, we're going to deal with this in a piecemeal fashion and we come to the table with that as a reality. nevertheless, why is anyone leaving down? why did the president leave town for his vacation, why did republicans start to leave town, why did democrats. if it is as serious as people say -- and i think it is, it would seem to me, even if the tea party is intransigent and that is what you want to say, they are terrible people and don't want to agree with anything, they are there and you have to deal with them, so everyone should stay in town, and can have their christmas eve dinner and do that, stay in town and figure this out and, the tea party, they believe in certain principles and they are fighting for them and think it is a spending
